Just a few meters from the beach of Sounion, one can wander around the archaeological site and especially the famous temple of Poseidon. The temple was built at the same time as the Parthenon during the Golden Age of Pericles and apart from being a place of worship, it was also a sign for sailors that they were close to Piraeus.
Sounion, its special location and natural beauty, has created myths over the years, inspiring arts such as painting and literature. Starting from antiquity and the myth of Theseus, Sounion was the place where the father of the mythical hero expected to see his son’s ship arriving from Crete with a white sail, a sign of his victory over the Minotaur of Knossos. However, as mythology tells us, Theseus forgot to change the black sail of the ship to a white one, thus giving his father the false impression that he passed away. Consequently, Aegeus, unable to accept the harsh reality, taking a step, fell into the void and thus the sea that stretched beyond Sounion was named Aegean.
Moving on to modern history and the Greek Revolution, the Aegean was a source of inspiration for the famous philhellene Lord Byron, who felt so enchanted that he carved his name into one of the stones of the temple.
The wider archaeological area of Sounion is a good example of the relationship between the high architectural thinking of the ancient Greeks and nature and its elements. It is no coincidence, after all, that the ruins have an excellent interaction with the unique nature that surrounds them. Visiting Sounion, one will be able to feel first-hand this unique interplay between the ruins and the steep cliffs and beaches of Sounion.
