A Day With the Dolphins of the Ionian
There is something magical about spotting dolphins in the wild. In the clear blue waters of the Ionian Sea they often appear when you least expect it jumping beside your boat playing in the waves or swimming just under the surface. Spending a day with them is not just a highlight of a sailing trip it is a moment you will never forget.
Where to Find Them
Dolphins are often seen around the islands of Paxos Antipaxos and off the southern coast of Corfu. They follow warm currents and love the peaceful conditions of the Ionian. Early morning or just before sunset is when you are most likely to spot them especially when the sea is calm and quiet.
At 99Knots we often design itineraries that include areas where dolphins are known to visit. While we cannot promise a sighting we know the patterns and locations that give you the best chances.
What to Expect On Board
As your yacht sails through the open sea the first sign might be a splash far ahead. Then another. Suddenly a group of dolphins is near your boat sometimes swimming alongside it or diving under the bow. Children and adults rush to the side to watch these graceful animals glide and leap in perfect rhythm.
Most dolphin encounters in the Ionian involve common bottlenose dolphins. They are curious and often interact with boats especially when the engine is quiet or the boat is under sail.
Respect and Admire
While it is exciting to see dolphins remember they are wild and should not be disturbed. At 99Knots we follow responsible viewing practices. We do not chase them or feed them and we keep a respectful distance if they do not approach us.
Sometimes they come very close by themselves and in these moments you can see them clearly their eyes their scars their smooth bodies and their joy in the water. It is a quiet kind of connection one that leaves you grateful and amazed.
