The famous Pontikonisi
Directly across from Perama lies the tiny island of Pontikonisi, nestled in the Ionian Sea. This iconic islet is instantly recognizable and widely photographed. The name "Pontikonisi" translates to "Mouse Island," a term likely derived from the island’s mouse-like shape when seen from above. However, other interpretations of its name exist. One version suggests that it was named after Pontian monks who may have settled there during the 10th century AD. Pontikonisi's history, however, extends far beyond the medieval era. According to one variation of Homer’s Odyssey, the Phaeacians helped Odysseus return to Ithaca aboard one of their ships. Today, Pontikonisi is more than just a scenic landmark it is also a site of religious and spiritual importance. At its summit stands the Byzantine chapel of the Pantokrator (Almighty), dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ. In general, access to Pontikonisi is restricted, adding an air of mystery and reverence to the site. It falls under the jurisdiction of the Municipality of Corfu, which has constructed a small pier to accommodate boats departing from the nearby Monastery of Panagia Vlacherna.
The Vlacherna Monastery dates back to the 17th century and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Vlacherna, a name that originates from the famous church in Constantinople. Until 1980, it functioned as a nunnery. The chapel is characterized by its whitewashed exterior, red-tiled roof, and two-story bell tower with a distinctive triple belfry. At the base of the bell tower, an arched passage leads into the courtyard of the monastery. Inside, the church is adorned with a carved wooden iconostasis and beautiful religious paintings, giving the space both artistic beauty and spiritual depth. The feast of the Virgin Mary of Vlacherna is celebrated on July 2nd, drawing crowds of worshippers who gather to pay their respects and participate in the festivities.
